If you’re dreaming of an adventure that feels otherworldly while still being incredibly dog friendly, White Sands National Park in southern New Mexico deserves a spot on your list. Imagine rolling dunes of soft, white gypsum sand stretching as far as the eye can see, glowing golden at sunrise and pink at sunset. It’s unlike anywhere else in the world ... and the best part? Unlike most National Parks, at White Sands National Park your pup is welcome to explore it right alongside you.

Why White Sands Is Special

Unlike traditional desert sand, White Sands is made of gypsum crystals, which means it stays cool underfoot even in the summer heat. That makes it one of the rare desert landscapes where dogs can safely join you without burning their paws. The dunes shift and change daily, creating endless new playgrounds for climbing, running, sledding (yes you can ride the dunes), and playing fetch with a backdrop that feels straight out of a dream. Plus we guarantee you will capture some beautiful shots (come at sunrise or sunset for the most magic).

Dog-Friendly Trails and Adventures

Dogs are allowed anywhere in the park as long as they’re on a leash (6 feet max). Here are a few must-dos:

  • Dune Life Nature Trail (1 mile loop) – A short interpretive trail that winds through the dunes and desert scrub, with signs highlighting the wildlife that call this landscape home.

  • Playa Trail (0.5 miles roundtrip) – An easy, flat walk to a seasonal playa that often fills with water, reflecting the mountains in the distance.

  • Alkali Flat Trail (5 miles roundtrip) – Don’t let the name fool you; it’s not flat! This is the park’s most challenging trail, weaving up and down dunes with wide-open views. A fantastic choice if your dog has lots of energy and you’re both up for a workout.

Or simply wander off the boardwalk into the backcountry dunes. There are no bad views here - every ridge opens to a new expanse of white.

Tips for Visiting With Your Dog

  • Time it right: Early mornings and evenings are magical, with cooler temps and stunning colors.

  • Bring water—lots of it: The dry air can dehydrate both you and your dog quickly.

  • Pack the basics: Poop bags, collapsible water bowls, and maybe even a doggy backpack if you’re planning a longer hike.

  • Mind the leash rule: The dunes can disorient you quickly, and the leash helps keep your pup safe if wildlife appears.

Why It’s a Bucket List Stop

Few places in the world welcome dogs so fully while also delivering a landscape this unique. Whether you’re hiking the dunes, picnicking in the sand, or simply watching your dog zoom around against the white backdrop, White Sands offers a memory you’ll never forget.
