Standard Training Programs vs. Behavior Mod: Choosing the Right Path for Your Dog
Nov 04, 2025
Unsure which training program is right for you dog? Let's breakdown the differences between our standard and behavior modification programs!
Behavioral History
We'll start with the obvious - the biggest factor in deciding which program is the best fit is your dog's behavioral history.
If your dog has a bite history, has shown aggression towards animals or humans (has escaped and attacked an animal, has lunged at passersby or guests in your home, etc.), has severe reactivity (overpowers you to the point that you can’t control them, redirects onto you out of frustration, can’t be taken on walks, etc.), or exhibits severe resource guarding (has harmed another dog or a person while guarding a resource), then we will recommend a behavior modification program.
If your dog has minor reactivity or resource guarding, or very situational aggression (such as at the vet), it's possible that our standard training programs may be sufficient.
Behaviors like jumping on people, chewing on household objects, barking in the home, puppy biting, etc. are all "normal" behaviors that we expect to see in untrained dogs and are covered in our standard programs.
Time
The biggest difference between our standard training programs and behavior modification programs is TIME. The addition of extra lessons and/or weeks of training gives us more time to form a relationship with your dog, go at their pace, build their confidence, etc.
If your dog is fearful or standoffish when they meet new people, or if they refuse to take food or play in new environments, they probably would benefit from the additional time they'll get in a behavior modification program.
If your dog warms up to people quickly, takes food in public places, and acts confidently in new environments, it's likely that they will do well in our standard training programs.
Training Focus
While obedience is an important part of all of our training programs, it is not the primary focus of our behavior modification programs. We must focus on behavior first, then address obedience.
If you've worked with a trainer in the past and haven't achieved the results you desired, or if you feel like your dog's obedience is situational and unreliable, there's a chance that there are underlying issues that haven't been properly addressed. It doesn't matter how reliable your dog's sit stay is inside your home if they're over threshold the second they walk out the door.
If it feels like obedience is a Band-Aid, then it probably is! In these cases, we'll always recommend a behavior modification program.
If you are uncertain which training program is the best fit for your dog, we recommend scheduling a virtual consultation (free of charge) with one of our trainers. We're happy to dig into your dog's history, discuss your lifestyle and goals, and make a plan to help you achieve those goals!
