One-on-One Training vs Group Classes... We Choose Both!

Dog training programs are typically categorized into three main formats - one-on-one lessons, group classes, and board-and-trains. At KeenDog, we offer all of the above, but all of our programs start with laying foundations in a quiet, one-on-one setting, both for the benefit of the dog and their human. Even our board-and-train programs include one-on-one pre-immersion lessons so that we can jumpstart training in an environment that's conducive to success for all involved.

After bringing home a new puppy, owners often do a side-by-side comparison of our programs with low-cost options like PetSmart, for example, and have trouble understanding, 1) Why vast difference in cost and 2) Why don't we offer a similar type of group class package?

Multi-week group class packages seem to be the most cost effective option on the market, so it's no wonder why they're attractive to perspective clients. Pay $150, get four group classes at your local pet store. Sounds like a steal, right? We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but there are several reasons why we don't recommend starting training with group classes.

Why We Don't START Training With Group Lessons

• Laying foundations in a distracting group environment will not produce the best results.  Imagine conditioning a puppy to a clicker in a shared space with lots of noise and distractions - your puppy hears a click from across the room -> their dopamine spikes in anticipation of getting rewarded -> they don't get a reward because the click wasn't intended for them -> the click no longer has any value.
• Perfect practice makes perfect. If you are trying to teach new behaviors to a distracted dog, it's unlikely that they'll learn the behavior correctly. Distractions are essential in later stages of training. but everyone is wasting their time if dogs do not learn the correct execution of the behavior from the start. Rehearsing improper or incomplete commands will not benefit your dog in the long run. 

• Dogs who are anxious or nervous can have a hard time warming up in a group setting. If they're too overwhelmed to eat or engage with their owner, it's unlikely they'll learn anything during the training session.

• Group classes follow a curriculum and it can be hard to keep pace if your dog gets ahead or falls behind. Every dog is unique, as is every owner, so the rigidity of a set curriculum doesn't work for most.

• The group class format means sharing the attention of the trainer. The initial stages of learning are very detail oriented. If you are having a hard time with something, or your dog isn't responding like they're supposed to, it can be hard to get the hands on help you need to be successful.
   

Why We Do FINISH Training With Group Classes

• The group class setting is the perfect environment to add distractions and challenge dogs.

• By the time they reach the group class stage, owners are great handlers and are well equipped to work independently with their dog. Having access to a trainer means that they can get support, though, if they have specific questions or need help troubleshooting a behavior.

• Group classes provide opportunities for owners to connect and become friends with like-minded members of our KeenDog community. 

• At KeenDog, we host group classes throughout the greater Charlotte area in real world places like the Whitewater Center, along the lightrail, Freedom Park, Renaissance Park, and many more so that your dog is exposed to a variety of locations beyond one designated training space.

• Training doesn't stop after a package of lessons or a board-and-train program has been completed. Training is most successful when it become a way of life. Clients who participate regularly in group class often have the best long term results because they constantly refresh their skills. 

So is private dog training worth the investment? Absolutely. Group classes serve a very important role in refining, finessing, and expanding training, but they pose many challenges in laying strong foundations.
