Bucket List Adventures With Your Dog: The Olympic Peninsula, Washington
Oct 28, 2025
If you and your dog crave fresh air, soft moss underfoot, and the kind of stillness that only comes from old-growth forests and misty mornings then the Olympic Peninsula is your dream destination.
This corner of Washington feels like stepping into another world. The air is thick with life, ferns drape from branches, moss carpets the ground, and the light filters through the trees in soft, shifting shades of green. It’s moody, quiet, and brimming with wonder - perfect for exploring side by side with your four-legged companion.
Lake Quinault
Nestled within the Quinault Rainforest, Lake Quinault offers a serene escape surrounded by towering evergreens and crystal-clear waters. You and your dog can enjoy peaceful walks along the lakeshore trails or simply soak in the calm that seems to hang in the air here. It’s one of those rare places where time slows down, and you remember what it feels like to breathe deeply. When we visited there was only one other couple on the shore the entire time we were there.
Kalaloch Beach Trail
For a dose of salty air and ocean views, head to Kalaloch Beach. The .3 mile trail winds through coastal forest and opens up to wide stretches of sand, perfect for a leashed romp or quiet stroll. On foggy mornings, the beach takes on a mysterious beauty that makes it feel like you’ve discovered your own hidden coastline.
Rocky Brook Falls
A short and easy .3 mile hike leads to Rocky Brook Falls - a gorgeous cascading waterfall surrounded by mossy rocks and vibrant greenery. It’s a refreshing stop for both humans and pups, especially on warm days. Bring a towel for muddy paws!
Ranger Hole Trail
This lesser-known 1.6 mile trail gem offers forested paths and riverside views. It's quiet, rarely crowded, and the cool forest shade makes it an ideal trail for dogs.
Falls View Canyon Trail
True to its name, this 1.5 mile trail rewards you with dramatic canyon and waterfall views. The lush vegetation and trickling creeks along the way create a sensory experience - the scent of wet cedar, the sound of falling water, and the sight of endless green.
Lower Lena Lake Trail
If you’re up for a bit more adventure, the 6 mile Lower Lena Lake Trail offers a moderate hike through dense forest to a sparkling alpine lake. The payoff is worth it with a stunning vista where you can rest, snack, and let your pup dip their paws in the cool mountain water. Plus you may have a wildlife encounter with some local Gray Jay (Canada Jay) who are friendly and curious birds that are famous for swooping down to snatch snacks from hikers’ hands (I personally had this experience and felt like Snow White in the forest).
Stop in Olympia
On your way to or from the peninsula, make a stop in Olympia, Washington’s eclectic capital city. It’s full of personality - a mix of art, nature, and small-town charm. Be sure to check out the Olympia Farmers Market, where you can pick up fresh local produce, baked goods, and artisan foods. Dogs are welcome in the open courtyard and stage pavilion areas (just keep them leashed), though they’re not permitted inside the main building, so plan to trade off browsing with your travel buddy.
Whether you’re walking beneath ancient trees, breathing in salty ocean air, or resting beside a mountain lake, the Olympic Peninsula offers an experience that’s grounding, humbling, and absolutely unforgettable. It’s a place where both you and your dog can truly exhale.
