Bucket List Adventures With Your Dog: Great Sand Dunes National Park
Sep 01, 2025
Love exploring national parks and traveling with your dog? Then Great Sand Dunes National Park belongs on your bucket list!
Located in central, southern Colorado, Great Sand Dunes is often overshadowed by other national parks in the region. Take it from a local, though - it's one of Colorado's best destinations! Here are a few reasons why:
- IT'S DOG FRIENDLY. Yes, you read that right! Very few national parks allow extensive exploration with dogs. Great Sand Dunes, on the other hand, is very welcoming of them! There are some rules restricting dogs from certain areas, but these are not areas frequented by most guests. Enjoy the frontcountry of the park with no worries, just keep you dog on a 6ft or shorter leash!
- The dunes are epic! It's hard to understand their scale until you're standing at the visitor center looking up at them. While there are other places around the world where you can explore sand dunes, the addition of the surrounding mountains makes for a truly spectacular setting. If you're feeling adventurous, rent a sandboard from a local outfitter!
- Come for the dune, stay for Medano Creek! This snow-fed creek is by far the park's most unique feature. Every spring, the snow from surrounding mountains starts to melt and forms a temporary creek along the dunes. The depth and flow of the creek varies based on how much snow there is on the peaks, but generally it's a shallow, wide stream of water. Bring a beach chair and let your dog (and children) splash for hours!
- There's great camping right within the park! Pinon Flats campground is just a short walk from the dunes and other hiking trails. Spend your day exploring and spend the evening relaxing by the fire with gorgeous views!
- The night sky is unreal! The park is certified as an International Dark Sky Park. For an especially good view of the Milky Way, try visiting the park in August or September!
Special considerations for exploring with dogs:
- The sand gets HOT! Visiting in the shoulder season is a good way to avoid extreme temperatures. Medano Creek typically hits peak flow from late May mid June, but it's usually flowing in May and the crowds are less of a problem then as well. If you must visit during a warmer month, avoid exploring the dunes during the day.
- Pack protective gear for your dog! The area surrounding the dunes can be extremely windy. Protect your dog's eyes from blowing sand with Rex Specs. Booties are also a good idea if the sand is warm to the touch. These ones from Ruffwear are a great option.
- Bring along lots of water! If you visit during the shoulder seasons, the cooler temperatures can be deceiving. Dogs and humans alike need to drink more water at high elevation to stay hydrated.
- Dogs are not allowed in the visitor center. If you plan to stop in, make sure you have a safe place to leave your dog, or take turns going inside while another member of your party remains outside with your dog.
