Are In-Home Lessons a Good Fit for Me & My Dog?
Jan 06, 2026
When signing up for training, it can be difficult to know which path will be the best fit. Board-and-train programs are amazing and have serious advantages, but in-home lessons are often overlooked as one of the best ways to train your dog!
The Advantages of In-Home Lessons
- We will train YOU to train your dog. Lessons are very hands-on - not only will your dog learn behaviors, but you will learn the skills necessary to teach and enforce those those behaviors. This will equip you to teach new behaviors and perfect old ones long after you've completed your training package.
- Lessons are extremely customizable to individual needs! While we refer to lessons as being "in-home," that's a bit of a misnomer. We always start with lessons in the home, where it's quiet and easy to build a strong foundation, we then take our training out to various environments. If you envision enjoying a drink at your local brewery with your dog, we can do a lesson there! If your ideal Saturday includes an off-leash hike with your dog, we can take your lesson to the trails! If you want to incorporate your kids in training, we can include them in lessons! We never take a one-size-fits-all approach to training, but this is particularly true in the case of lesson packages.
- In-home lessons allow your dog to stay with you throughout their training! We understand it can be hard to spend time apart from your dog. With lessons, that's not a problem!
- For dogs with behavioral issues, in-home lessons provide both the safety of the home environment (particularly important for dogs with fear and anxiety) and the opportunity for trainers to see authentic behavior not impacted by changing their environment. If you take a dog out of the environment they're comfortable in, their behavior will inevitably change, especially if they lack confidence. Keeping dogs in their home environment provides consistency that's hard to achieve with a board-and-train program.
How To Know If In-Home Lessons Are A Good Fit
Knowing the advantages of in-home lessons, ask yourself...
-
Do I want to play a hands-on role in training?
-
Do I have time the time and bandwidth to practice with my dog between lessons?
-
Do I want to learn the ins-and-outs of training and teaching behaviors?
-
Am I committed to making any necessary changes at home to give my dog the structure they need to be successful?
