Meet the Team: Lydia

meet the team Jan 07, 2025

In this series, we’ll be chatting with every member of the KeenDog team. We’ll dive into their origin stories, their passions, and the experiences that have shaped them into the trainers you know and love. And maybe we’ll discover a few quirks, too!

Next up, KeenDog trainer, Lydia…

Tell us about your first dog!

My very first dog as a kid was named Chester, which quickly became Chester the Bad Dog. He was a cattle dog mix and my family and I spent countless hours chasing him when he inevitably got loose and took off after a herd of elk, which can happen frequently when you live in the mountains in Colorado. He was a rascal, but I loved him. Thankfully, he lived to a ripe old age before he crossed the rainbow bridge, despite his escapades. I learned a lot from him, but perhaps the most valuable lesson was the many benefits of having a reliable recall.

What inspired you to become a dog trainer?

I became a dog trainer because over time, I found myself more and more drawn to working with dogs. There’s something incredible about spending my days observing, connecting with them, and helping them thrive. Training gives me the chance to be outside, moving, exploring, and constantly challenging myself to learn and grow. But what really inspires me is the opportunity to help families build stronger bonds with their dogs. Knowing that I’m making a difference in their lives, creating happier and safer homes – that’s what makes every day so rewarding.

What is your favorite thing (behavior, sport, etc.) to train and why?

My favorite thing to train is your everyday pet dog. I love that every dog and client brings their own unique challenges and goals to the table – it’s like a new puzzle to solve each time. No two dogs are the same, and figuring out what each one needs to thrive is what keeps me excited and motivated. Whether it’s helping a dog build confidence or teaching a family how to communicate better with their pet, I love seeing those lightbulb moments when everything just clicks.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new dog owners?

? Don’t hesitate to reach out to a trainer! We spend so much of our time learning about these amazing (and sometimes tricky) animals so that we can guide you through the journey. Working with a trainer early on can help you avoid the common bumps in the road and really make the most of your relationship with your dog. It's all about setting both of you up for success from day one so you can enjoy the best parts of life with your new furry friend, without all the stress.

What is one thing you wish dog owners knew or understood?

Training is not just about the dog; it’s a shared commitment that requires everyone’s involvement. While we can make a significant impact during training sessions, real success hinges on the follow-through at home. Living with dogs is such a joyful and rewarding experience, but it does take effort. By dedicating themselves to this journey, owners experience a profound connection that makes all the hard work truly worthwhile.

If you could teach your dog one human skill, what would it be?

To help my husband with laundry because I just. don't. want. to. do it

What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had while training a dog?

One of my most memorable moments was when I attended my very first puppy raiser meeting. I had just started my journey as a trainer, and walking into that park pavilion was a mix of excitement and nerves. But when I saw my puppy put all the skills we’d been working so hard on into action, it was like everything clicked into place. All that time, effort, and patience had led to this moment. I felt this surge of pride and a deep sense of fulfillment, realizing that not only could I really do this, but also I’d found something I truly loved doing and wanted to keep pursuing.

If you were a dog, what breed would you be and why?

I wish I could answer this question with pictures, haha! I mean… I look a bit like a Whippet with enormous eyes, I have bangs like a Springer Spaniel, and if I have to go to the doctor or the DMV, my internal monologue is just a Pug screaming. I love snuggling on the couch like a Cavalier King Charles, I act like a Golden when I see my friends, and I have a sensitive tummy like most doodles, but that doesn't stop me when I'm craving dairy. I'm driven and excited to learn, especially if food is involved, like a Lab, AND I can be a bit of a princess like Demi Moore's Micro Chihuahua, Pilaf (if you don't know this dog, you must IMMEDIATELY go find it on Instagram).

If you could train any famous dog from movies or TV, who would it be and why?

I don't know that I would've wanted to train this dog, but I absolutely loved the movie Togo. Watching that wild little puppy transform into a heroic dog as it finds its place in the world is pure magic. It really highlights how important it is for dogs to have the opportunity to fulfill their genetic drives and instincts. The right home, the right family, and the right fit can make all the difference. With a little guidance, they can lead incredible lives. Side note: I’m also a huge fan of Bruiser Woods from Legally Blonde!

Anything else you want the people to know about you?

I’m an open book! If you have any questions about me, my dogs, or how I train, just ask—I’m always happy to chat!
